Asc. Prof. Dr. Ahter D. Sanlioglu

After graduating from Akdeniz University Faculty of Arts and Sciences with a BS degree in Biology, Dr. Ahter D. Sanlioglu has entered into a graduate program of the Department of Medical Biology and Genetics, Akdeniz University Faculty of Medicine. During her master thesis, she studied genetic abnormalities found in individuals with ganglioneuroblastoma using Comparative Genomic Hybridization. Ahter

After getting her MS degree in Genetics in 2001, she continued her academic training as a PhD student in Medical Genetics Graduate Program of the Health Science Institute of Akdeniz University. The focus of her PhD thesis was to develop novel gene therapy methods for patients with prostate cancer. Her thesis study was the first to initiate setting up and running of adenovirus vector production and purification method in Turkey, in the Gene and Cell Therapy Center, previously called the Human Gene Therapy Unit. Her results were published in a leading gene therapy journal of Nature Publishing Group named Cancer Gene Therapy. PhD degree in Medical Genetics was granted to her in 2005.

Later, she continued her postdoctoral training in the Department of Medical Biology and Genetics. Her postdoctoral studies included investigation and breaking of TRAIL resistance mechanisms in prostate cancer as it did for her PhD thesis, and also other cancer types like breast and lung cancer cells etc. In addition, she participated in development of a novel siRNA approach to down regulate TRAIL decoy receptor expression on surface to sensitize cancer cells to adenovirus delivery of TRAIL.
Moreover, the revelation of TRAIL/TRAIL receptor expression profile of patients with cancer and its connection to disease prognosis were among other studies she pioneered in the center. All these results were published in internationally well-known journals such as Cancer Gene Therapy, Human Gene Therapy, Journal of Urology etc.

After passing her scientific board exam in Medical Genetics, she received her Assoc. Prof. Dr. degree from UAK in 2008. Then she was appointed as a faculty member to the Department of Medical Biology and Genetics where she has been working more than a decade, at Akdeniz University Faculty of Medicine.

Her recent research indulges in gene and cell therapy of diabetes, particularly Type 1. Genetic modification of islet cells to improve islet graft survival, beta cell proliferation and/or regeneration are her primary research interests. Findings from such research she participated or directed were published in various well-known journals such as Human Gene Therapy, Pancreas, Diabetes Metab Res Rev, Exp Diabetes Res etc. She received many national and international scholarships and awards due to her scientific achievements.
